Interview on "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show"

Just a quick post - Jimmy Moore was kind enough to interview me on his "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show". It was tremendous fun, and we got to discuss some interesting stuff. Check it out.

I've been trying to get a blog done on some recent thoughts on the laws of thermodynamics and metabolic regulation. Hoped to have it by the time Jimmy's show was on, didn't quite make it. Hopefully will wrap it up by this weekend - stay tuned.

Thanks Steve. I'm glad Jimmy found me too, I really enjoyed that. It's a different vibe to verbalize these ideas as opposed to blogging them.

Dave..... I thought your vibe was great and that was one of the best pod casts I have heard all year....and I told Jimmy that too. You didn't come off as slick like so many do but rather sincere and intelligent. You spoke to the common folk. I loved it.

Do you have any thoughts on the Omega 6/3 ratio and over all health? That was one area not touched on in the cast. Would love a quick overview of how important you think this issue is in today's food culture.

Thanks for your efforts...looking forward to more blog posting from you this year.

@KENNY10021, @Anonymous

Thank you, I'm extremely pleased at the positive response.

I think Omega-6/3 ratio is important. However, I think quantity and type are also important. Both are polyunsaturated and easily oxidized. Taking large quantities of flax oil to balance high omega-6 content in the diet, while probably better than doing nothing, seems like it may be also adding to oxidative stress.

IMHO, excess omega-6 can largely be avoided by not having processed foods. Pastured meat, raw dairy, and eggs are good whole food sources of omega-3 (and plenty of other great stuff) as well as being relatively lower in omega-6, along with the usual sources like wild-caught seafood. As often seems to be the case, eating closer to "paleo" seems to fill the bill without too much extra mental effort required.

The type of omega-3 matters as well. DHA seems to be the primary functional omega-3 in humans. It is rather less clear to me that EPA and ALA have much effect unless converted. This conversion is inefficient, again, taking lots of ALA (which is converted to EPA, and then to DHA) leaves around a lot of excess PUFA which may do little besides add to oxidative stress. I shoot for supplements that are high in DHA, and prefer those that give me some other goodies too.

I like krill oil and fermented cod liver oil (from Green Pastures) for supplementation. Take care that your omega-3 does not get oxidized. Krill oil is nice because it contains a powerful antioxidant. I keep the CLO in the fridge. Green Pastures has good bottles as well. "Fish burps" are apparently a sign your supplements are funky.
